02:03 pm - Niteblade Art Blog: House of Chamberlin This Halloween, for a different kind of treat, visit the House of Chamberlin. Open its heavy oaken doors, step through its dark stone threshold, and prowl its eerie halls. Spy strange, wondrous, fantastic, and frightful scenes. Meet lusty vampires, hungry werewolves, macabre musicians, and deadly dragons. Check out examples of Ric Chamberlin's artwork in the latest Niteblade Art Blog entry, "House of Chamberlin".
Cheers and chills!

12:30 pm - Niteblade Art Blog: Faerie and Fantasy I just posted another Niteblade art blog entry. This time around, I feature the faerie and fantasy art of the character concept artist and illustrator Amber Alexander. A soldier turned traditionally trained artist, Amber discovered digital art during her last semester at the University of California at Berkeley. She was hooked, and decided that digital was the medium for her.
Check out more about Amber and her work here: Faerie and Fantasy: The Art of Amber Alexander.
Oh, by the way, I managed to slip "fays" into the entry, just to make a point (and because it worked). I simply couldn't help myself. Not to mention, I didn't want to use "fairies" after using "faerie" earlier in the paragraph.

12:32 pm - Niteblade Art Blog: Bloody Horror In the latest installment of the Niteblade Art Blog, I feature the work of the accomplished horror artist Jerrod Brown. A traditional artist and a southpaw, Jerrod has been painting and drawing for nearly forty years. A huge fan of horror movies and the artwork found in the classic genre magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland, Jerrod lets his love of horror shine through in his deliciously dark paintings. Check out three examples of his work here: "Bloody Horror: The Frightening Art of Jerrod Brown".
And now I have just one more thing to say about this - LEFTIES RULE!

12:33 pm - Niteblade Art Blog: Moods Dark and Dangerous A new installment of the Niteblade art blog is now on-line here. This time around, I feature the darkly disturbing art of Daniele Serra, an illustrator hailing from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. His works have appeared in a variety of European, Australian, and American publications, and his book of dark art, Illusions, is available through Black Coat Press.

12:26 pm - Niteblade Art Blog: Pencilled Mayhem II In the latest installment of the Niteblade art blog, "Pencilled Mayhem II", I once again feature pencil creations by the fantasy artist Shane Lees. This time around, Shane has sent me some works with a surreal bent. I find his "Astral Jellyfish" and "Spider Eye" especially appealing from a compositional perspective. And you simply must check out the detail in the dragon in Shane's "Moment of Decision". He did an amazing job drawing the beast's scaly texture.

05:03 pm - Niteblade Art Blog: Magick & Fantasy I just added a new entry to the Niteblade art blog: "Magick & Fantasy: the Artworks of Lori Baratta". A full-time professional artist and illustrator, Lori creates everything from New Age and mythical designs to portraits of people and pets and contemporary fine art. Much of her work definitely has a magical quality.
Check out a few samples of Lori's work at the Niteblade art blog! You can also find products featuring her designs at Lori Baratta Artworks.

10:42 am - Submissions Wanted: Niteblade Art Blog Although I've been quiet about it lately, because I haven't had anything to post, I am still the art blogger over at Niteblade. Unfortunately, the zine had some problems a while back, and the previous art blogs were lost. However, the art blog is still supposed to be an ongoing feature in the Niteblade News section of the zine's web site.
Weird thing is, I've received a few queries, but then I've gotten no replies to my follow-up e-mails asking for actual examples of art to feature in the blog. This leaves me scratching my head in puzzlement. I can't post examples of art if I have no examples to post.
Come on, all you fantasy and horror artists out there, I know what it's like to prefer payment for your artistic endeavours, but a little free publicity never hurt (and it has been known to help). And that's what we're offering at the Niteblade art blog, a bit of exposure for up-and-coming horror and fantasy artists. So send a few examples of your work (previously published is fine as long as you retained the rights to your work), along with a little bit about yourself, to: art@niteblade.com
(Full submission guidelines can be found HERE.)

Dan's work has appeared just about everywhere, on many a magazine and book cover. Not only is Dan prolific, but he's versatile, too!
By the way, I'm looking for art submissions for future installments of the art blog. So, if you're an aspiring fantasy or horror artist looking for a little exposure (payment is in exposure only), please consider submitting some examples of your work here: art@niteblade.com.

03:40 pm - Rhonda Parrish Day at Beth Wylde's Yahoo Group
Rhonda Parrish, writer, poet, and founder and editor of the fantasy and horror e-zine Niteblade, will be appearing on Beth Wylde's Yahoo Group today (Monday, December 15). She will spend her time chatting about her work as a writer and Niteblade editor, as well as giving away prizes!
And why am I posting an entry about this? Well, as Niteblade Art Blogger and a poet who has had a handful of poems published in Niteblade, I figured I would stop by Beth Wylde's Yahoo Group and join in the chat. Rhonda has already put on her interviewer hat and asked me a bunch of questions about such things as: how long have I been writing, what are some of my own "personal cliches", what poets I admire most, what inspired me to write "My Final Masterpiece" (my latest Niteblade publication), and what pieces are closest to my heart.
This is my first-ever interview, so I'm pretty excited. Okay, sometimes it doesn't take much to get me excited, but I take what excitement I can get! Current Mood: excited

11:32 am - Poem in BEWILDERING STORIES, Cinquain in NITEBLADE
My poem "Peg Powler" now appears in issue 316 of the e-zine Bewildering Stories. I drew my inspiration for this piece from the lore about the water-demon/nursery bogie said to haunt the river Tees. I approached the verse as if I were a parent or caregiver warning children to stay away from the potentially dangerous riverbank.
Also, my cinquain "My Final Masterpiece" now appears in the December 2008 issue of the fantasy and horror e-zine Niteblade. I have no idea where the inspiration for this piece came from, but I do know it's one of my most erotic horror poems to date. Mind you, this is coming from a guy with rather Victorian sensibilites regarding erotica. Unusually for me, the horror in this piece is mundane, not supernatural. I wouldn't write poems like this as a rule, but the imagery I saw in my mind's eye was just too deliciously horrific to pass up. And, as an artist, the idea just struck a chord.

03:53 pm - Niteblade Art Blog Featuring Ciaran Collins
The first installment of the Niteblade Art Blog is now on-line here. In this inaugural art blog I feature the work of an aspiring illustrator from Northern Ireland, Ciaran Collins. I like how Ciaran's art is light-hearted and yet darkly atmospheric. It reminds me of the sort of stuff I adored when I was a kid. Heck, I'm still rather fond of the cute-and-creepy style. Check it out!

07:11 pm - Niteblade Art Blogger The editor of the fantasy and horror e-zine Niteblade sent out a call for an art blogger. I happened to be one of the applicants who answered that call. The idea of posting blogs to promote the work of various aspiring artists appealed to me.
Well, the editor offered me the position, and I accepted. I am now the art blogger at Niteblade!
So, if you are a fantasy or horror artist looking for some exposure, if you would like to see your work featured in Niteblade's art blog, please send me examples of your art and a little bit about yourself to: art@niteblade.com. Niteblade can't offer any monetary remuneration for your art; payment is in exposure only. However, I do promise to spread the word about the entry featuring your work.
Let me see whatcha got!

03:09 pm - Horror Cinquain Accepted at NITEBLADE My horror cinquain "My Final Masterpiece" has been accepted for publication in the December 2008 issue of the fantasy and horror e-zine Niteblade. This particular poem exhibits a somewhat erotic nature. Well, the subject is about as erotic as my work ever gets, anyway. And unlike many of my other horror poems, "My Final Masterpiece" does not have a supernatural theme.
I believe it pays to explore new themes every now and then. It exercises the muse, helping to keep creativity limber.
For a while, I wasn't sure if I would have any publications in December. I don't have much in my submission pool right now, and I've been too busy on other projects to work on much poetry for zine submission. I haven't really been trying that hard to keep my roll rolling. So I'm very glad that my cinquain will appear in Niteblade. It means that my roll will roll on into December.
Now on to 2009...
