01:13 pm - The Birth of Sentience on Aggraboth V

The Birth of Sentience on Aggraboth V

A green jungun raises her head
Out of the black primeval muck.
She spreads her rainbow hued neck frill
And stares at the huge crimson sun.
The sight ignites a mental spark;
Enlightenment widens her world.

Strange ideas course through her brain
And fill her mind with new notions.
"Who am I?" she wonders gravely,
"And what might I be doing here?
How was all this I see first made?
Is there a purpose to my life?
And what may greet me at life's end?"

With clearer vision than before
Her amber eyes look all around.
They espy her scaly comrades
Feeding on some armoured quibbibs,
Oblivious to her wondrous
Contemplative epiphany.

Anxious to share her new-found thoughts
She opens her fanged maw and roars;
Junguns lack a spoken language
To put concepts into real words.
Disappointed at her failure,
She sheds a tear and sinks back down
Into the primordial ooze.

02:21 am - Another Saint George in AT Zazzle Store

For a while now, Crystalwizard has been asking for another Saint George to feature in the Abandoned Towers Zazzle Store, in part because merchandise featuring my other Saint George drawings has proved to be somewhat popular. Well, we've sold a handful of Saint George items, anyway.

The above image is a drawing a few years old that I just got around to adjusting for use in the store. I removed the background colour, made the ground of the shield and surcoat an off-white, and touched up the image here-and-there. And now the adjusted image of "Saint George as a 14th Century English Knight" appears on merchandise in the Abandoned Towers Zazzle Store.

My manipulation of this image got me thinking about my approach to digital art. While I understand some traditional artists dislike art composed on the computer, I do think that the computer can be valuable tool for enhancing traditional art. I could never have changed the colours so easily with a piece coloured in the traditional manner of ink, pencil, or paint. And I've even been known to manipulate the drawings themselves using the computer. However, I almost always resort to ink on paper for my initial drawings, the bare bones of my art.

I guess, just like in many things, I'm a middle-of-the road sort of guy. In terms of digital versus traditional art, I'm not a strict adherent of either approach. However, even though it is coloured digitally, I still consider my art to be traditional, since it is initially drawn by hand. (Mixed media, perhaps?)

11:50 pm - Cosmic Journey Illustration

Copyright © 2009 Richard H. Fay

I created the above weird and wild illustration to accompany my poem "Cosmic Journey", appearing in the on-line version of Abandoned Towers. The image already appears on merchandise in the Abandoned Towers Zazzle Store, and sooner or later should be published on the Abandoned Towers site.

After drawing quite a few decorated medieval-style letters for another Cyberwizard Productions project, it was nice to take a break from the historical and draw something much more imaginative. And I had the general look of the "green ghungliders" stuck in my head for quite a while now, so I just had to draw them sooner or later. Otherwise, my head might eventually explode. And that would be messy.

My illustration "Amongst Faerie Oaks" is now available on various items in the Abandoned Towers Zazzle Store:

Check it out! And please consider buying items featuring this piece, or items featuring other examples of my art. Any sales will help keep this particular artist from starving (or at least give me more reasons to keep on a drawin').

11:49 am - Duelling Dragons

Duelling Dragons
by Richard H. Fay

For a while now, Crystalwizard has been asking for some circular images to use on merchandise in the Abandoned Towers Zazzle Store. Most of my recent drawings have been rectangular in shape, intended for use as illustrations or filler art in print or on-line. However, once I started pondering the possibilities, I thought I could do something draconic in a circular fashion.

I drew my inspiration for this piece from a legend about Merlin's youth. As a young man, Merlin used his prophetic vision to reveal to King Vortigern that two dragons, one red and one white, were responsible for the nightly destruction of the king's castle-under-construction. Thus, I coloured one dragon red, and the other white.

This design benefitted greatly from the ability to colour my drawings digitally. It took a few tries to get the colour around and inside the knotwork just right. I wouldn't really have been able to experiment with different colour placement using traditional methods.

Anyway, check out the merchandise at the Abandoned Towers Zazzle Store featuring my "Duelling Dragons". I think it looks cool, if I do say so myself.

07:23 pm - Mermaid Illustration

Today, I finished this illustration of a mermaid:

It should be appearing on some merchandise in the Abandoned Towers Zazzle store in the near future. The editor seemed to like the image. Actually, her exact words were "she's absolutely adorable".

And I didn't even know I could do adorable!

Be a giant of the grill! Loom over the competition in your kitchen! And let everyone know it's not wise to bother the cook, especially when the cook is wearing an apron featuring my illustration of a rather mean-looking giant:

04:13 pm - Merchandise Featuring My Artwork
The managing editor of Abandoned Towers has decided to use several examples of my artwork on Abandoned Towers Zazzle merchandise. At least one of the images appeared on Flashing Swords Zazzle merchandise (since deleted from the storefront), but most of the material is new to merchandise.

Please take a look at the Zazzle scroller below. Feel free to leave comments, or join the fan club! And, of course, consider purchasing some examples of merchandise featuring artwork by yours truly. I personally think the stein featuring the unicorn image is especially nice, although the wyvern t-shirt is cool, too.
